Software engineering anyone?????
why does everybody i know doin engineering wants to eventually enter the IT industry???
UG: BIO-TECH
JOB: SOFTWARE ENGINEERING
UG:BIO-MEDICAL
JOB: SOFTWARE ENGINEERING
UG:ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION
JOB: SOFTWARE ENGINEERING
UG: ANY ENGINEERING COURSE UNDER THE SUN
JOB: SOFTWARE ENGINEERING
why is this happening? why do ppl decide to specialise in a field of engineering....study for 4 years and eventually decide not to continue with that and eventually enter the IT industry???? Bio tech for example.....leads u through a course that makes u a professional in the very basics of all life and teaches u diferent ways of experimenting with DNA...Genetic codes and what not.they are trained in the course of 4 yrs to specialise in their subjects.....for what?.... to eventually end up with software engineering?? is it the money that tempts them so much or what??? i do agree the IT industry does give off generous amounts of cash as soon as the engineers get the jobs but why dont ppl take some time off and realise dat doin a PG in their own course would probably help them a lot more and would even eventually lead to bigger paycheques....they could specialise in their own fields and get better technical jobs connected to bigger companies rite?????? could somebody help me out here.....was speakin with a friend of mine which made me take time out and think about this.......
MY VIEW OF THIS TOPIC IS PRETTY NARROW MINDED AND I HONESTLY DON KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE IT INDUSTRY. SO NO OFFENCE TO ANYBODY WHO'S PROBABLY DOIN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING. I WAS JUS LOOKIN FOR AN ANSWER....SO THOUGHT I WOULD BRING UP THE QUESTION HERE. NO OFFENCE AGAIN GUYS! THANKS! lookin out for some views.....

money obviously. for starters, if u place urself well, the payechk is arnd 3L p.a., and as ur experience goes up, so does ur paycheck (i've been in the field for 8 years now, came here thru another blog, had a friend called Sid and took a wild guess this blog was his)
and a chance to wok out of India(i believe this is the biggest crowd puller).
Did you know that BDS graduates in B'lore switch to s/w? well i've worked with one and he wasn't bad at all technically.
i guess the most imp reasons are - u get a jump start on ur career, get to travel, and can easily survive the industry.

oh and btw, the industry is never gonna be like this forever. like callcenters will be obsolete by 2010, so will half of the s/w industry as more automation creeps in(even in s/w)....
that will be the time when graduates stick to their fields they were educated in...
[liked the simpson thingie, i live in Springfield, MO and a big fan of simpsons myself... go homer :DD ]

yello :)
well... i dont know...maybe they dont like what they're doing...and abt bio-tehc..lemme tell u... they teach u all the theory stuff...the practicals is like... not that great... so thats one reason i guess...and a normal bio-tech degree wont get u anywhere... its of no use...that maybe another reason...

i know this sounds outta sorts..
but were u in bhavan's by any chance?

I agree to what swathi says...these days a normal BSc doesn't get you anywhere.Unless one does a triple degree or an attractive course such as pharma biotech...which gives u a wide range of knowledge.Obviously in IT you not only get good pay cheques but also work in the US or anywhere else for a brief period of time through the company. But I still feel that one can excell in their own field rather than switching to IT.Just need to pick and choose the right path.If you feel you have the guts....go for it Sid!!!

thts coz..lik every1 said..easy to get a job n can travl places..and also one need not be a topper or sumthin u cld b an avrge also..unlike the othr course where u need to b in d top to get a good job,pay n all(especialy Bio-tech.and Phamacy corses)....n moreovr its somwat like a secure thing coz they'r many jobs availbl 4 a sftwre eng..well,no offence to ny1, thts wat i think...n I CLD BE WRONg also..aft all im not an eng student..im a Bpharmacy student....
and its their life so we r no1 to tel dem wats wrong n right..

Interesting question, but think about it this way: when you want to do you engingeering, not everyone does exactly the stream he or she wants to do it. So to assume that they would be interested to continue in civil/biomedical/whatever engineering may not be correct.
And then you have all these graduates who suddenly want a job and the IT sector is there for them. Think about it ...there must be thousands of engingeers in TN today, but how many hardcore engineering jobs ? L&T and Ashok Leyland and TVS and all that ? So the others have to go somewhere !

hey...all u guys seem so correct. never really thought of it that way...wasn't very broad minded about the whole issue. but i still feel if more people get into engineering streams of work...technology can improve in a faster way...anyway...very interesting comments...im pretty much enlightened now. thanks guys!!!
more comments always welcome of course....

hey ad...i agree to what you have said.No one can dictate what job one wants to get into.Everyone wants to have good and secure jobs and IT seems to be an ideal one. However,I have decided to go into science with some knowledge in technology...I just want to see if science grad's can also make money by getting a decent job.Be it in India or anywhere else.Obviously everyone cant be a software engineer by profession.
Hey Sid,what have you decided to do once you are out of college??

Its all about the money,
its all about the dum dum duh dee dum dum.

It should be passion that drives someone, not money. And hey the society looks at those doing arts and science as totally worthless individuals(I did experience the same pressures.)Every one wants to do engineering ...so the arts and pure sciences take a back seat. Where is the room for creativity??
And remember there is no nobel prize for engineering.

LOL at Deepti!
Actually I love that song.
And yes...its all bout the money baby!
So who better to put it in perspective than the Beatles?
Now gimme money that’s what I want
That’s what I want that’s what I want
That’s what I want, ye-ye-yeh,
That’s what I want.
Money don’t get everything it’s true.
What it don’t get I can’t use.
So gimme money that’s what I want.
And maybe you'll feel better if I tell you that Im one of those lost souls out there who chose to go in the field of pure science...immunology to be exact.
:D

@deepti: cute!!!!
@priya:very VERY true....nobody bothers much about them...sad...and they are the ones who usually end up doin somethin useful with their lives on the long run... and btw....there's no nobel prize for engineering?????? thats odd....
@megha: immunology rocks man...dats such an awsome course...im sure ur gonna go places with that degree....good luck to u...and oh...ur rite...the beatles always rule!!!
